Located on the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula, Sorrento is the perfect gateway to explore the best of southwestern Italy. Using this small coastal town as your base, quench your thirst for Italian cuisine, ruins, sea views and natural wonders by exploring beyond Sorrento’s plunging cliffsides and narrow alleys. In this blog, I will take you through some of the best day trips you can take from Sorrento.
1). Amalfi Coast
Can’t get enough of the sand, sea and sun? Well, head to the Amalfi Coast to experience all three in some of the most beautiful, picturesque beaches Italy has to offer. Made up of several coastal towns along a 50 km stretch of Southern Italy, the Amalfi Coast is a popular holiday destination, and for good reason. Looking like something off a magazine brochure, this pastel-coloured fishing village has everything you would think Italy should have. Little laneways and cobbled streets lined with cafes and lemon groves, the Amalfi Coast has several popular towns to choose from. Relax on the blue-umbrella beaches of Amalfi or challenge yourself to a clifftop hike in Positano, there really is something for everyone. Just over an hour drive away from Sorrento, it’s an easily manageable day trip offering seaside views the whole drive over.
2). Pompeii
Who hasn’t heard of the ruins of Pompeii? An archaeological marvel, the ruins of Pompeii are thousands of years old. A famous tale of destruction brought to life by the volcanic remains that are still around today due to the volcanic ash that preserved them. The ancient city of Pompeii was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius which submerged the city during its eruption in 79 AD. Buried under 6-8 metres of volcanic ash, streets, houses, ornaments and even bodies of those that lived all that time ago have been excavated over the centuries. Located just 40 minutes’ drive away from Sorrento, Pompeii is a must day trip during your stay in Italy. Walk the same streets as Pompeii’s citizens and see a snapshot into an ancient civilisation who were victims to the same volcano that looms behind it today.
3). Island of Capri
If you’ve had enough of driving around and you want something a little closer to home, the Island of Capri is situated just 20 km from Sorrento. Catch a ferry from the mainland and make your way across the Tyrrhenian Sea towards this Italian gem. Renown for its natural beauty, fascinating history and wealthy visitors, Capri is a relaxing and interesting day trip. Walk around the historic centre of Anacapri or visit the grand villas of past Roman Emperors which whisper of past times when this island was perhaps secluded and untouched. A boat trip to the Faraglioni rocks and the Blue Grottoare also a must! The rock formations add to the island’s mystery, whilst the blue grotto will dazzle you with its aquamarine waters. Finish off your day with a romantic evening dinner overlooking the cove-studded coastline, where you can enjoy traditional cuisine whilst discussing the day’s activities.
I hope this blog post has convinced you to explore beyond Sorrento. This area of Italy has so much to offer, it would be a crime not too!
